SALLISAW (KFSM) -- Campaign signs are popping up all over Sequoyah County before the race for sheriff is decided Nov. 8.

Incumbent and Democratic candidate Ron Lockhart is hoping to continue the work he said he's done as sheriff so far, while Republican candidate Larry Lane is hoping he's elected for a first term.

Lockhart said he is proud of the work he has done as sheriff to bring the office into the 21st century.

"After taking in 2009 the sheriff's office, the equipment was outdated; there was 250,000 miles on each vehicle. We went all kinds of different grants to get equipment. We purchased about 17 new vehicles since then. No vehicles have been purchased with county money. We have gone after grants, seizure and our cash accounts to buy those vehicles," Lockhart said. "We also started the D.A.R.E. program in  five rural schools. That has helped a lot.  We give extensive training to all of our employees, the deputies. We have more than the required amount each year for that. I am proud of what we have done. I am still not finished with what I want to do. So, that's why I am running for re-election this year and I would appreciate their vote."

"The inmate road crew and work crew is a good program. We actually had that going back in the, the previous sheriff was using that program and it worked great then and it's worked great for the last eight years. Hopefully we can continue that," Lane said. "One of my biggest things is working drugs. There is not a lot of drug raids going on out in the rural areas. The cities, we've got eight police departments in the county and they work it fairly safe. It's basically Muldrow, Sallisaw and Roland, but out in the county there's not much going on like that and that's always been my focus. We are going to do a lot more of that, that's for sure. "
