Arkansas Upsets Ole Miss On Late Touchdown

Razorbacks Improve To 5-2

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)–Arkansas used a late Jared Cornelius touchdown to knock off #12 Ole Miss 34-30, getting their first SEC win of the season.

Ole Miss failed to score on its opening possession for the first time all season. That led to an Arkansas touchdown–Austin Allen connecting with Dominique Reed for 51 yards. The Rebels answered on the next drive, as Evan Engram caught a Chad Kelly pass from 13 yards out. But the Razorbacks stayed in front after Gary Wunderlich’s missed PAT.

The Rebel’s have one of the lowest ranked rush defenses in the country, and Arkansas took advantage on its third drive. A Rawleigh Williams 53 yard carry set the Hogs up in the red zone. Drew Morgan finished the drive with a 13 yard touchdown from Allen to increase the lead to 8 after one quarter.

Arkansas increased its lead to 17-6 on a 42 yard field goal from Adam McFain. The senior is now 2/2 this season. But on the next drive, Akeem Judd’s rushing touchdown ate into the Razorback advantage, and Ole Miss trailed by just 4. The majority of the first half was a back and forth affair, capped off by Chad Kelly’s 90 yard drive in 48 seconds to tie the game at 20 heading into the locker room.

After a Henre’ Toliver interception early in the third quarter, De’Andre Coley was ejected for targeting. It’s the second time that Coley has been thrown out of a game this season (Texas A&M). Brooks Ellis also had a pick in the third quarter, which was nullified by an offsides penalty on Arkansas.

Much of the third quarter resulted in punts. Finally the Razorbacks struck with 3 minutes left in the third. Allen led a 10 play drive that lasted over 5 minutes and Williams ran in a forward pitch that gave the Hogs a 27-20 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Early in the fourth, Austin Allen threw an interception to Marquis Haynes and the Rebels capitalized. Chad Kelly’s second rushing touchdown of the game put Ole Miss back on top 30-27. But Arkansas fought back, and Jared Cornelius took a sweep handoff into the end zone to regain the lead, 34-30. Arkansas’ defense held up, and stopped Chad Kelly and the Rebels for the third straight year.

Arkansas finishes its tough month next Saturday, October 22nd at Auburn. Kickoff is at 5pm and the game will be televised on ESPN.
