Former 188th Wing Flight Surgeon Dies At 84

edwin-whitesideFAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) — A former flight surgeon with the 188th Wing in Fort Smith passed away on Sunday (Oct. 23).

Edwin Whiteside, of Fayetteville, died at the age of 84. He was a retired allergist and immunologist.

Whiteside also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He spent more than 25 years as an active duty flight surgeon in the Arkansas Air National Guard, including spending time a as a flight surgeon with the 188th Wing fighter group in Fort Smith.

A visitation for Whiteside will be Tuesday (Oct. 25) from 5-7 p.m. at Nelson-Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Funeral services will be Wednesday (Oct. 26) at 1 p.m. in Central United Methodist Church. Military Honors will follow with burial at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville.
