Powell Carrying Torch Of Fayetteville Quarterbacks

Senior Closing In On State Records

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)--It's common for high schools to place their best athlete at quarterback. Senior Taylor Powell is proving that an old school pocket passer can still thrive.

"I just feel like the game really slows down as you play. I started as a sophomore and of course you have your sophomore struggles, and then as the year goes on you build up. And now I'm a senior and I just feel like the game's really slowed down," Powell said.

Even his new head coach has noticed an improvement. "I think he's making better decisions. I think he's really becoming more elusive with his feet. He's escaping, getting out of trouble and then finding his receivers," Purple Dog coach Bill Blankenship said.

Rivals have taken notice as well. Chris Wood, Har-Ber's head coach said, "He's a humble kid, he's driven. I mean he's gonna go the extra mile, he doesn't think it should be handed to him. Makes all the throws, got an unbelievably quick release, doesn't hold on to the ball. Has great vision on the field, and I like his character his drive and his passion, great leadership qualities."

Fayetteville beat Har-Ber last Friday 28-0, and Powell needs just nine more touchdowns to break the 7A state record, currently held by Brandon Allen with 99. Powell says having the Allen brothers as friends has helped him excel in high school.

"Austin's always been a mentor, he still is and so is Brandon. I mean I know those guys really well, I've grown up with them. So just being able to know how the FHS way is and how to play quarterback here, and just try to be the representation of what FHS means," said Powell.
Powell has committed to play college football in the ACC at Wake Forest. First, he aims to lead Fayetteville to a second straight state championship.
