FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- Dozens of scarves are now lining Garrison Avenue in Fort Smith to keep those in need warm as the cold sets in.

Homeless Scarves organizer Jessica Barnes said the idea is to give people who can't always afford items to keep them warm easy access to at least a scarf.

"We're out here tying scarves to light posts, so if anyone needs them they can just walk up and grab what they need," she explained.

Danelle Shannon Martin said she brought extra scarves she had around the house to donate Sunday (Nov. 20).

"We do have a lot of cold, hungry, disabled, homeless people right here under our noses in our community," she said. "For me, it helps my heart to give people hope. There was a time in my life when I was in a similar situation. I didn't have a lot of hope and the streets were kind of my home."

Anyone is welcome to take a scarf.

"Don't be shy," Barnes said. "We place tags on them telling people that they're not lost and if they're cold, to go ahead and grab one. There's no shame at all here."
