FORT SMITH (KFSM) - One local college is helping the community get into the spirit of Christmas. The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith will turn on their holiday lights on Tuesday night (Nov. 22).

School officials said they used to wait until after Thanksgiving to turn the lights on, but students said they wanted to do it sooner. This way the campus is a little more festive for students who don't go home during the break.

The school hopes it's a good way to bring the campus and the community together. "The whole family is more than welcome to walk through the lights and kick off the holiday season," said Stacey Jones, Vice Chancellor for Campus and Community Events.

"I just love the Christmas feeling that UAFS gives everybody," said Juliana Kremers who is a student at UA-Fort Smith. She adds, "You feel like you're actually a community with everybody."

The lighting ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. at the Bell Tower and Campus Green, where attendees can admire the UAFS campus garnished with holiday decorations.

Some good spots to park for the ceremony would be by Stubblefield Center and the new Windgate Art Building, which are both located on Waldron Road.

The lights will be on each night through the end of December.
