PHOENIX (KFSM) — Founding member of Sister Sledge, singer Joni Sledge, has died at the age of 60.

She was best known for being the lead vocalist for “Lost in Music” (1979) and “Reach Your Peak” (1980).

Sledge was found dead in her home by a friend in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday (Mar. 10), the band’s publicist, Biff Warren, confirmed Saturday (Mar. 11) to 5NEWS.

A cause of death has not been determined.

Sledge and her sisters Debbie, Kim and Kathy formed the Sister Sledge in 1971.

The group’s defining song was “We are Family” released in 1979.

That dance song became a hit and emphasized empowerment for women.

Sledge is survived by an adult son,Thadius, 24, along with her sisters and other family members.
