POTEAU (KFSM) — A man who was killed after being hit by a train on Tuesday (March 14) has been identified, according to Poteau police.

The incident happened about 12:20 a.m. just off the Dewey Avenue train crossing in Poteau city limits, according to a Poteau police department news release.

Russell Gene Fryer, 65, of Poteau, was killed in the accident, according to the release. Fryer was standing on the tracks facing north as the southbound train approached. He began waving, and then took a step to the right just before he was hit.

Fryer’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office, where he was identified by fingerprint records.

This collision continues to be investigated, police said.

This is the same area where a train and car collided in August, killing a woman and three boys.
