SALLISAW (KFSM) — Police have found an inmate who escaped from work release Wednesday (May 3).

Austin McCallie escaped after jumping out of a work crew vehicle while on supervised work detail about 11:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Sallisaw Police Department.

Shortly after, a person called dispatch and reported seeing a man in jail clothing run to a parked truck at the Walmart parking lot, the release states. He drove away in a Chevrolet extended cab flatbed pickup heading south on Highway 59, police said.

About 7 a.m. Thursday (May 4), McCallie’s vehicle was spotted along Interstate 40, east of Muldrow.

He was taken into custody about an hour later between Muldrow and Roland, said Capt. Jeff Murray with the Sallisaw Police Department. McCallie was initially arrested April 30 on suspicion of misdemeanor larceny.

He now faces additional felony charges including escape, Murray explained. He is being held in the Sequoyah County Detention Center without bond.

The Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department, Muldrow Police Department, Roland Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol assisted in the matter.
