FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- Crews from the city's water and sewer department are working to repair a water main break at College Avenue and Township Street, according to a press release from the City of Fayetteville.

Crews arrived on scene at 11 a.m. and are encouraging drivers to seek an alternate route and use caution if driving near the work area.

“Anytime we have a leak on College we always have traffic issues because we have to close down one or two lanes and it’s very noticeable and causing traffic congestion. In fact, we have several leaks during the month where nobody ever notices that we are out and about," utilities director Tim Nyander said.

The eastbound lane of Township from Green Acres Road to College Avenue is closed. Crews will continue working to fix the problem throughout the night. Nyander said that drivers need to be careful when driving in that area especially after dark.

He said the city does have an aging water system and they can't predict where the leaks are going to happen.

“So far this month we’ve had 57 leaks," he said. "A lot of it has got to do with the changing of the moisture in the ground from moist to dry. It causes the ground to move some and of course sometimes the pipes in the ground are going to move with it.”
