SCOTT COUNTY (KFSM) -- A Scott County deputy was shot at while responding to a domestic call Tuesday evening (Dec. 5).

Deputy Stacy Wieburg was grazed by a bullet in the elbow after being dispatched to a residence about 6 p.m. for a domestic-related call at a home on Imogene Road in the Nella Community.

The sheriff said 47-year-old David Bentley and his mother got into an argument, and she went to a neighbor's house, who called 911.

Bentley was cutting donuts in the road and neighbors thought he was drunk, according to the sheriff. The suspect went into his yard when the deputy arrived. Wieburg told him to put his hands up, and that is when the sheriff said Bentley fired at least two shots at the deputy. The deputy fired two shots back while waiting on backup, but Bentley was not injured. Bentley then went inside his house and a standoff lasted for several hours.

The sheriff said the suspect's girlfriend was also in the home at the time.  Clarice Esquilla, 70, is facing charges of fleeing and hindering apprehension. She was still in the Scott County Jail as of Monday, (Dec. 11). No bond has been set yet.

Deputies barricaded the residence at about 8:40 p.m. and attempted to negotiate with the Bentley to surrender to arrest. The standoff lasted several hours.

Wieburg sustained injuries, was treated at a local hospital, and has since been released.

Bentley is facing two felony charges of battery against a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault. His bond has been set at $500,000.
