SEBASTIAN COUNTY (KFSM) -- The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office is investigating a home burglary on Mt. Zion Road, according to Cpt. Philip Pevehouse.
The homeowner's son returned home Tuesday (Dec. 12) to find everything from the house missing, including guns, underwear and Twinkies, Pevehouse said.
Christmas presents were also stolen from under the tree, according to Pevehouse.
"It's just sad to see," Pevehouse said. "Not only is someone's home being broken into, but somebody's property has just been destroyed."
Pevehouse said that deputies are now following up on tips and leads.
"Christmas should be a time of family and fun, rest and peace," Pevehouse said. "Unfortunately, there are people in our society that don't see it that way. They see somebody else's property as their advantage."
Residents on Mt. Zion Road said they usually look out for each other. Jerry Wilkinson offers a warning to the thieves.
"We don't have a neighborhood watch, but neighbors kind of take care of neighbors," Wilkinson said. "It would be a real shame if they got caught in someone's home. This is a real unforgiving neighborhood."
The sheriff's office delivered neighborhood alert flyers to those living on Mt. Zion Road and urge residents to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.
"I would say, thieves beware," Wilkinson said. "Buy your presents, don't steal them."
Investigators and deputies are now working to find out who is responsible, hoping to add some light back to the families' Christmas.
"We're going to do our best to see that these people are prosecuted to the fullest extend and get back as much property as we can," Pevehouse said.
A witness told investigators that a white truck was seen in the area around the time of the burglaries.
