(Update: Tyler Buchanan is now facing capital murder charges in the death of his two month old daughter, which carries the possibility of the death penalty in Arkansas.)
VAN BUREN (KFSM) -- A 19-year-old man is facing capital murder charges in connection to the death of his 2-month-old daughter.
Capital murder charges against Buchanan were filed July 9. He was originally arrested on first-degree murder charges in June.
Tyler Buchanan, 19, notified police Tuesday (June 12) morning at about 9 a.m. of a 2-month-old girl at 1112 Baldwin Street who wasn't breathing.
"He loved the baby, he did talk...and he said the baby was a gifted baby an advanced baby, he showed the baby off and let me play and hold the baby." said next door neighbor Tricia Dewberry.
The baby was pronounced dead at Sparks Hospital in Van Buren.
Police said the baby had been deceased for several hours before they were contacted.
"The evidence is showing us that she was actually smothered sometime during the middle of the night," said Detective Jonathan Wear.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Buchanan originally told police the baby woke up at 5:30 a.m., he then said he gave her a bottle and went back to bed.
He told police when he woke up later he noticed the child was not breathing and he tried to shock her heart using an extension cord that was cut.
However, the affidavit states Buchanan later admitted to a different story.
He admitted to holding the child's head against his shoulder to stop her from breathing because she was crying loudly and he wanted her to stop.
According to the affidavit, he told police he knew what he was doing was wrong.
Buchanan then took active steps to hide his crime, including not notifying the baby's mom that lived in the same home, the affidavit states.
Buchanan is facing first-degree murder charges and was booked into the Crawford County Detention Center without bond.
