FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- The Fort Smith Police Department confirmed a child was hit by a car at S 35th Terrace & Holyoke Avenue around 6 p.m. Monday (June 18).

The child was taken to Children's Hospital in Little Rock where they are in critical condition, according to Sgt. Wes Milam.

Police believe it was an accident and the driver was not cited.

An eyewitness who lives on the street where the accident happened tells 5NEWS she was in her home when she heard a loud thud. She said she ran outside saw a little boy laying in the street, severely injured.

According to the eyewitness, the driver got out and began to call 911. At the same time, she said the boy's mother ran to scene to be with him until first responders arrived.

The eyewitness tells 5NEWS she and other people living on S 35th Terrace believe a sign or a speed bump should be put in, because they have been concerned about something like this happening.
