BENTONVILLE (KFSM) — An 83-year-old man trying to pick up debris along Interstate 49 north of Bentonville has died after being struck by a vehicle Friday (Sept. 14) morning, according to Arkansas State Police.

Police said John L. Ingles of Bella Vista,  was hit around 10:51 a.m. near the Slaughter Pen Road overpass while trying to recover a chair that had fallen from a truck being used to haul furniture. Reports say he was struck while trying to cross the interstate.

Arkansas State Police say Ingles has died from his injuries.

The accident shut down the two northbound lanes of Interstate 49 just before the interstate becomes U.S. 71 as it enters Bella Vista.

Arkansas State Police advise people never to walk alongside the highway for any reason, and that it is illegal to do so in the state of Arkansas.
