FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- Police are investigating a shooting at Harley A. Wilson Park near the  Future School of Fort Smith in the Belle Grove Historic District in downtown Fort Smith.

As students were being let out early for the day, gunshots rang out near the charter school. Students were being released at 1 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 18) when five or six shots were fired down the street at Harley A. Wilson Park, causing faculty to rush students back inside.

"I heard five or six gunshots. When we realized they were gunshots we immediately ushered them into the building," a Future School of Fort Smith faculty member told 5NEWS. "Unfortunately it was a time where there was a lot of students outside, because of pick up and stuff like that, but we immediately had staff members surround the building and told everybody to go inside."

The Future School of Fort Smith was placed on temporary lock-down for 15 minutes until Fort Smith police gave the clear.

People at the scene say they saw people sitting underneath a pavilion and Harley A. Wilson Park when they were approached by a black car.

"I'm pretty sure it was a black KIA. One gentleman and one woman got out, they went up to it, and there was a confrontation, I'm not sure, and then five shots were fired," a witness at the scene told 5NEWS.

Fort Smith police searched the surrounding neighborhoods for a suspect. Police are now searching for the black KIA.

"There were no known injuries. There were people in the area, but no known injuries at this time," Aric Mitchell with Fort Smith police told 5NEWS.
