Two Arrested After Police Chase In Fort Smith

A Fort Smith police officer noticed a car with a fake license plate and tried to pull it over at Highway 71 and South 24th Street, but the driver, Martinez, sped off, according to Sgt. John Hicks with the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office.

Vega jumped out of the car and ran off near E Street and 18th Street, but police caught him soon after at 19 and 20th Streets, Hicks said.  Vega was in possession of a bag of marijuana.

The vehicle eventually stopped in an alley between 13th and 14th Street off of E Street, and Martinez was arrested. Police found a bag of a white crystal substance on Martinez, that later tested positive for methamphetamine.

Police found a stolen 9mm pistol with two mags and a meth pipe, inside the car, Hicks said.

Martinez and Vega are facing charges of reckless driving, fleeing by means of a vehicle, felon PDP, possession of schedule 1 drugs, theft of property, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of schedule 6 drugs, parole violation, and fleeing by foot.
