NEWPORT, Ark. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a northeast Arkansas man to 25 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a 10-month-old girl.

Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce says 21-year-old Benjamin Collier of Newport was sentenced on Friday in the death of an infant who was found dead in an apartment in Newport on Sept. 10, 2017.

The child was reported to be unresponsive when officers were called to the scene. Medical personnel later found the child dead.

Boyce says in a statement that investigators determined that the child “died as the result of a closed head injury.”

Boyce has said evidence in the case put Collier at the scene and implicated him as being responsible for the child’s injury, which caused her death.
