BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) — City officials in Bentonville are seeking a permit from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to kill geese at the municipal airport.
Airport officials say the geese typically spend about four months each spring at the airport and pose a safety hazard because they could strike aircraft. The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that airport officials had first discussed deterrent measures, but that those were costly and would involve moving the geese at least 300 miles (480 kilometers) away from the airport.
The newspaper reports that if the permit is issued, trained law enforcement officers would shoot the geese.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there have been 194,000 incidents of wildlife striking planes in the U.S. between 1990 and 2017.
