LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas’ governor says Maj. Gen. Kendall W. Penn will serve as the next adjutant general of the state’s National Guard.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Wednesday announced Penn will replace current Adjutant General Mark Berry, who is set to retire Aug. 10. Penn has served for the past three and a half years as the executive director of the National Guard Association of Arkansas and prior to that was the deputy commanding general, First United States Army. Penn began his military career in 1982 upon enlistment in the Arkansas Army National Guard.

Hutchinson praised Penn as an accomplished and principled leader with nearly 40 years of experience in service.

Berry has served as adjutant general since early 2015. He called serving as adjutant general the pinnacle of his career.
