ARKANSAS, USA — Alex Stewart joined the 5NEWS team in September 2023. He serves as the station's sports director.

Alex has been watching football from the day he was born— literally. His first hours on Earth were spent laying on his Dad's stomach watching the 49ers play. Since then, football has been his life.

He grew up in Lincoln, Calif. where he played football for 10 years culminating with an undefeated senior season as the quarterback for the Lincoln Fighting Zebras. However, he eventually realized being six foot and slow wasn't going to get him to the NFL.

Luckily, more familial influence would keep him on this path.

His grandpa, Paul James, was the play-by-play man for the BYU Cougars and having heard all the stories about Granda Paul (like finishing calling a game despite having a heart attack half way through!) he knew a career in sportscasting was what would keep him close to the game he loves!

So with his course now set, he set off for the University of Nevada, Reno, where he earned his bachelor's degree in journalism. He would go on to further expand his knowledge of the industry and sharpen his skill by becoming a part of the first ever graduating class in the newly formed Masters Sports Journalism program at Arizona State University.

Since graduation, Alex has been all over the country with stops back home in California, Nebraska and Wisconsin, where he most recently spent 3 years serving as Sports Director at WAOW in Wausau, before finally arriving in Fayetteville.

If you hadn't figured it out by now, Alex loves football, from high school to college to the pros, he finds that each has something unique about it that makes it special in it's own way.

His life isn't entirely consumed with football though, he also loves the outdoors: hunting, fishing, hiking. You name it and he probably likes to be out doing it.

But not every day can be spent outside, so somewhat out of necessity in order to survive the Wisconsin winters, he developed the survival skill of staying inside and playing video games. PS5 > Xbox

He is also a massive foodie— he'll try just about anything. But his culinary quest in life is to find the best burger, so if you have any recommendations send them his way!

And last, but certainly not least, family is also incredibly important to him and he knows he wouldn't be in this profession if his parents, Scott and Cheri hadn't supported him his entire life. From dragging his sisters Maddie and Miri to every football game he played so they wouldn't miss one, to watching his sportscasts... to put it simply, their love and support means— and is— everything.
