ARKANSAS, USA — There is a very good chance you’ve seen or heard Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes at one time or another considering they’ve been around since 1984.
They are one of the most popular bands to ever perform in the area, and this year, they're celebrating 40 years, but what is the story behind “the greatest party band in the southwest?"
"I went and told my mother, god rest her soul, I said, 'Mom, Bubba wants me to play in a band ... You'll never guess what our name is mom, it's Mr. CabbageHead and the Screaming Radishes.' She said 'Ricky, you will never get a job with a name like that,'" said Ricky Young, the lead singer known as 'Mr. Cabbagehead'
In the band's 40 years, Young says the band has been all over Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kansas, and Oklahoma. And in that time, Young says not much has changed in the style of music they play.
"They liked hearing My Girl, James Brown, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chicago, and... you know, a lot of other musicians that are probably a lot more talented than we are ... people want to hear that," said Young.
Young says the secret to staying together this long is "not killing each other ... We grew up together and we've been friends forever. We'd agree to disagree and shake hands ... We kind of roll with the punches."
Young says the future of the band is in good hands, "We like to get young people involved, we had a horn player from Kimmons Middle School, and then Tommy's got a really talented daughter, Zoe, who sang with us at the last benefit."
"It's vegetable-related rock for a healthier lifestyle," said Young.
