Hiking on trails normally involves walking up to scenic views of landscapes. This week in Adventure Arkansas Sean Bailey takes us to a trail that has an added glimpse of what lies underground too at the unique pair of trails in the Lee Creek Reservoir.
At the end of Gelly Road, you run right into the Lee Creek Reservoir. On the northwest edge of the parking lot sits the entrance to the homestead and the Crack in the Rock trails. In order to get to the fork with both trails, first you have to pass by the Bodine Cemetery with graves dating back over 100 years.
After passing through the clearing, you can hop across the creek and travel along the Homestead Trail. It's a 3.3 mile loop up the slightly steep terrain. You have scenic overlooks of the water draining in the Lee Creek Reservoir to look forward to at the top!
If you follow the Blue Trail instead, you follow a series of rock formations for about a mile and a half. Eventually, it will lead you to the fascinating geological feature known as the Crack in the Rock. The crack originated out of the Arkoma Basin and formed out of sandstone. Although it is deep, you can see the bottom.
Past the crack, the Blue Trail also features two waterfalls and continues along the creek with more rock formations overhanging.
Have fun but do be careful on the trails due to the ice on parts of the trails. To see all the trails we have visited, head over to the interactive Adventure Arkansas map.
