Bentonville's Museum of Native American History holds treasures

Explores the rich history of Native Americans through artifacts including pottery, headdresses, and traditional garments.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — The Museum of Native American History in Bentonville holds interesting history, artifacts, and activities that have even sparked the interest of the movie industry.

A popular place for families and school districts in Northwest Arkansas, the museum is booked up for field trips every day this November and is filled with interactive activities like hunting arrowheads.

The museum exhibits many artifacts, like native pottery, directly from Arkansas and Oklahoma.

The pottery comes from different tribes and has distinct traits depending on what elements were pulled from the river. The pottery produced by the Cato Tribe has darker clay, while the Quapaw clay is lighter and red.

Artifacts from the Spiro Mounds in Oklahoma, which was a vast trading center between natives, are also displayed.

Headdresses from the Plains tribes, which are covered in eagle feathers to honor an act of bravery, are also exhibited. Although the Plains tribes' headdresses look similar to a typical headdress, each tribe had its own way of doing things.

The Blackfeet had similar traditions and honors but a different look.

Native and historical garments also adorned the halls. The museum holds original garments from the Osage Nation in Oklahoma from the 1900s and even caught the eye of some high-profile Hollywood filmmakers.

Clothing from the Osage tribe from the 1900s was studied for the movie "Killers of the Flower Moon."

Directors of "Killers of the Flower Moon," starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, called the Bentonville museum to study the outfits for the film. An Osage consultant came to Bentonville to examine and measure the garments.
