SPRINGDALE, Ark. — After its opening in 1947, closure in 2023, and purchase that same year, the AQ Chicken House in Springdale is set to get a new look after plans and images for the new location were unveiled.

In July 2024, the new AQ Chicken House footprint was submitted to the City of Springdale for approval, marking a big step forward in the restaurant's relaunch.

The restaurant off North Thompson Street has hosted presidents and television shoots, but it's known most of all for its community-first atmosphere and historically delicious chicken.

AQ stands for Arkansas-Quality, and the Chicken House certainly lived up to its name, leaving a mark on people from all over.

Springdale locals Tom and Robin Lundstrum, along with their daughter and son-in-law Gracie and Jacob Lively, teamed up to revive the restaurant in 2023.

“I am very much looking forward to working with my family to reimagine AQ and re-open the restaurant for future generations to enjoy. AQ is a 75-year-old institution that is part of the fabric of Springdale, and we can’t afford to let our history go,” said Tom Lundstrum in 2023.

They say the old building couldn't be renovated, but their goal with the new building is to tie the past to the present, preserving the familiar atmosphere and memories that so many people have.

"Creating a place for people to be able to gather, whether that be families or business meetings or civic groups, it needs to be a good place to gather," AQ business partner Jacob Lively said. "In addition to that, we knew that we wanted to be able to tap in to be relevant for the next 76 years, and so introducing that kind of outdoor component and being able to have a place for kids to be able to play while parents enjoy AQ."

The group looking to revive the restaurant is set to begin the permitting process, "which will involve collaboration between the development team and city staff over the coming weeks," according to a press release. "The process involves addressing questions or comments regarding the restaurant’s design and proposed location."

“This is an exciting step forward in reviving a beloved landmark in Springdale,” said Lively. “After months of planning, design, and pre-development work, we are excited to advance toward the construction phase of the new AQ Chicken House.”

After gaining approval from the city, the team will look to acquire further permits and break ground on the new location.

The new 13,000-square-foot design features outdoor dining areas, dedicated carry-out access, and an "ice cream room for made-on-site premium ice cream."

"We want the new AQ Chicken House to be a community gathering space, a place where families can come together and create lasting memories,” said Tom Lundstrum. “We are committed to preserving the legacy of AQ while bringing it into the future with thoughtful design and modern amenities.”
