BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — A harmful algal bloom has been detected in a Benton County waterway, prompting the State of Arkansas to issue an advisory on Sept. 24.

According to a release from the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment's Division of Environmental Quality, or ADEQ, the harmful algal bloom was detected in Lake Flint Creek in Siloam Springs.

As a result of the bloom, ADEQ issued an advisory, encouraging the public to avoid contact with the water in the affected area.

"Harmful algal blooms may produce toxic substances which could result in headaches, weakness, shortness of breath, muscle spasms, and gastrointestinal illnesses," the ADEQ release said.

The release explains that cyanobacteria make up the bloom and have been visually confirmed and confirmed via preliminary testing.

The public is encouraged to be specifically cautious in regard to the exposure of children, pets, and livestock. ADEQ said that if potential exposure occurs, was animals with clean tap water and avoid letting them ingest toxins.

ADEQ is monitoring the situation and will remove the advisory when the bloom subsides.

ADEQ adds that if you suspect a harmful algal bloom to avoid contact and report it at habs@adeq.state.ar.us or call 501-682-0744.
