Coyote mating season is here, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has some tips for keeping you and your pets safe.

Late January through early March is considered coyote mating season. The period typically lasts four to six weeks with a peak in February.

The AGFC says to do the following to keep pets safe:

  • Coyotes are wild animals, so keep your distance. If you have a small animal and you've seen a coyote in the area, you may want to stay close to your pet.
  • Fences are a good way to keep coyotes out of your yard. As man continues to encroach on their habitat, sightings are more likely to happen.
  • If you are walking your dog, you should always keep your pet on a leash and perhaps carry a walking stick, or something to make noise to frighten off the coyote.
  • Make sure you're not attracting coyotes by leaving dog food outdoors.

The AGFC also says that coyote hunting season is year-round on private land and that they are plentiful in Arkansas, so it's not unusual to see them.
