SPRINGDALE, Ark. — The public is now able to use a newly turfed soccer field at Randal Tyson Recreation Complex in Springdale.
"This park was built in 1990 and after 30 some years we started to see some wear and tear on it," Chad Wolf, Director of Parks and Recreation for the city, said. "So, we decided we needed to upgrade some of the facilities to make it more routine."
The field not only received a makeover with some new turf, but the city replaced chain linked backstops with new netting, and new lights are currently being installed. Baseball and softball fields located on the complex are getting new turf as well.
In addition to the fields being utilized to host soccer matches, designated lines were painted for a growing number of residents interested in playing the sport of lacrosse.
"Some of the lines are actually for lacrosse, both men's and women's," Tanner Spangler, Recreation Superintendent for Springdale Parks and Recreation, said. "Lacrosse has grown in the area and across the country and we're actually going to be partnering with Ozark Mountain Lacrosse to host a Springdale Parks and Rec Lacrosse League and that'll actually start in the Spring."
Further improvements to parks in Springdale include the development of four new baseball and softball fields at Shaw Park.
The city is paying for the improvements using a $16 million bond package passed by voters last year.
Rental spots for the field at Randal Tyson Recreation Complex will be open on March 1 and reservations for those spots will be available starting February 17.
