FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — As we head into winter and temperatures start to drop, warming centers for those experiencing homelessness are gearing up.
"Our cold weather response is typically when the temperatures reach or go below 32 degrees. Our warming centers open, and then in the evenings we also accommodate additional overflow overnight." Said Captain Patrick Connelly, the Area Commander of the Northwest Arkansas Salvation Army branch.
And just in time for the winter, the Salvation Army is scheduled to open a new warming center on Monday, Nov. 6 that can hold more than 60 people in an emergency.
"Renovations are currently being finalized. it will take our capacity to 48 for regular overnight shelter, and then we would, of course, have overflow capacity. We anticipate approximately 15 that we could accommodate on mats on the floor for inclement weather." Captain Connelly added.
Captain Connelly also mentioned that anybody who stops by the Salvation Army will not only get food and shelter but also help in combating any issues they may have.
"There are many things, many barriers that prevent individuals from being rehoused. And so part of what our program is here is to help individuals identify those barriers and begin to address them." he said.
To volunteer or donate to the cause, you can call The Salvation army or any other homeless shelter near you.
