UAMS researchers get $3.7M grant for high blood pressure studies

The grant will be used to fund the exploration of the link between immune cells and hypertension.

ARKANSAS, USA — Dr. Shengyu Mu and his team of researchers at UAMS have been awarded $3.7 million from the National Institutes of Health to continue their study on the role of immune cells in hypertension, UAMS announced Tuesday.

The grant renewal began with a $685,749 payment in April and is expected to fund a comprehensive series of experiments and advanced analyses over the next five years.

Mu, an associate professor in the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, was awarded an initial $1.89 million grant in 2019 to fund the exploration of the link between immune cells and hypertension. Their first studies found indications that immune disorders contribute to high blood pressure, which will pave the way for their next phase of research, UAMS said in a news release.
