LIHEAP helping low-income families pay for summer utilities

Summer applications for the program open Monday, and it runs through Sept. 29.

ARKANSAS, USA — Summer applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) open Monday, July 10.

LIHEAP is a federally funded program helping eligible families and individuals pay for summer utilities.

The Economic Opportunity Agency of Washington County (EOA) is one of multiple organizations across the state accepting applications.

Executive Director Delia Anderson Farmer says in the summer heat, electricity is essential.

“It’s getting hot, and as temperature rises, electricity is not a luxury; it’s really a necessity,” said Farmer.

"This program provides relief for families that have to make hard choices between paying rent this month or buying food or buying medicine. With this program, it gives them a little bit of relief with energy costs."

The summer cooling program runs through Sept. 29.

You can apply for LIHEAP at the organization operating in your county. To find out where your community organization is, click here.

Eligibility is determined by household size and income. The 2023 Arkansas Eligibility Chart, along with more information about scheduling an appointment and required documentation, is available on EOA's website.
