PEA RIDGE, Ark. — For the second time in the last ten years, nonprofit Home for our Troops is back in Arkansas building a home for a disabled veteran, this time in Pea Ridge.
"Homes for our Troops is in the process of building a home for a disabled veteran, for somebody who has been injured in conflict on behalf of this country that has suffered some kind of a disability that requires an adaptation for a home," Congressman Steve Womack.
Andrew and Julia Butterworth of Missouri are the recipients of the house. When they had the choice of anywhere in the country to live, they chose Pea Ridge.
“The community works together, and we take care of each other. I kind of sense that here and I see and that's one thing that we really look forward to and be involved in and helping other people and helping our community because I know they're gonna be there for us,” Andrew said.
The two aren’t just bringing themselves and their three children to the area, however. They are also bringing yet another way to give back to even more veterans.
"I started my nonprofit asking people to donate their use campers and RVs that they don't want any more that are in decent shape, so they can give them to us, and we'll fix the little things that need to be fixed and we're gonna give them to combat veterans," Andrew said.
Andrew served in the army for many years. He had to have his leg amputated after his vehicle was hit during active duty, and he was nearly killed. Julia said he flatlined three times.
The couple has been through a lot and are excited for the new house in Pea Ridge. They hope to be moved into their new house by August of this year.
