FORT SMITH, Ark. — According to the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD), a suspect has been arrested in connection to a shooting that killed a 15-year-old boy and injured a 12-year-old boy on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
Police said the shooting took place in the 1400 block of North 36th Street. All involved in the incident are minors according to FSPD, including the suspect, so no names will be released.
The suspect was arrested at around 11:39 p.m. the same night, police said.
Certain details can't be released, but officials can confirm this is a homicide investigation. More information will be provided "when available and appropriate," FSPD said.
Family and friends of the 15-year-old who was killed told 5NEWS the teen was trying to break up a large fight and protect his girlfriend from getting hurt when he was shot. Police have not yet confirmed what led to the shots being fired.
His family held a private memorial for him by releasing balloons on Dec. 7. They said they will hold a public memorial service in the coming days.
Friends also tell us the injured 12-year-old is still in the hospital but is expected to recover.
We reached out to Sebastian County's Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Shue, who said he can't release more information until the charges have been decided. He said the decision could come as early as Dec. 8.
