Fort Smith woman sentenced after threatening to blow up office of Gov. Sanders with a bomb

Scott pleaded guilty to threatening to cause a catastrophe and battery in the second degree.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Susan Scott, a 66-year-old Fort Smith woman, pleaded guilty on Friday, Aug. 30, to charges related to her threatening to build a bomb and blow up the office of Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

The affidavit for probable cause says that on June 14, 2024, Scott made the call to Sanders' office.

According to her arrest affidavit, Scott continued to "threaten the life" of the governor when authorities went to her home on an arrest warrant. During her arrest, police describe Scott resisting officers by pulling, kicking, and head butting to avoid getting arrested.

Scott pleaded guilty to the crimes she was charged with: Threatening to cause a catastrophe and battery in the second degree, both of which are felonies.

She was sentenced to six years of supervised probation, a $2,500 fine, ordered to not contact with the governor, her family, or her office, and has to complete anger management counseling.

Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Shue gave context to the sentence, stating that although she was charged with harming an officer during her arrest, the officer didn't suffer a serious injury and approved of Scott's sentencing. Shue also indicated that the governor also signed off on Scott's sentencing, saying that "The victims approved of the disposition of the case, or my office would not have pled the case."

When it came to the charge pertaining to Scott threatening to build a bomb, "The Defendant had no present ability to manufacture an explosive device, much less place and detonate an explosive device in the Office of the Governor," Shue said.
