Man facing attempted capital murder charges after shooting at Casey's in Rogers

A dispute over a reportedly stolen car led to a shooting late at night in the parking lot of a Rogers general store.

ARKANSAS, USA — According to the Rogers Police Department, on Friday, Dec. 30, Rogers Police Officers responded to Casey's general store at 514 North 2nd Street in reference to a shooting call.

They described hearing gunshots and seeing two men running through the parking lot. Another employee was able to show Corporal Pennington video surveillance of the incident.

In the video, two men were seen getting out of a parked Honda SUV, walking to the dark passenger car, and appearing to be talking to someone in the vehicle.

The dark passenger car then began to drive away quickly.

One of the men who is wearing a black ball cap (later identified as Cory Thompson) pulled out a pistol and pointed the pistol at the passenger car as it drove away.

As the car pulled away, Thompson reportedly pointed the firearm at the car as it circled the parking lot. During this time, the pistol was pointed at another bystander getting gas.

As the victim's vehicle drove through the parking lot, Cory Thompson and the second man (later identified as Thompson's brother, Tyler Thompson) began running after the vehicle. In the video, Tyler reportedly threw something at the vehicle, (later identified as being driven by the victim, Shane Goff.)

Tyler Thompson then got into the Honda driven by Tyler's wife, Taylor Thompson. The Honda then reportedly left the parking lot northbound onto West Locust Street.

Corporal Pennington stated officers discovered a bullet in the parking lot, two 9mm spent shell casings, and a red Bic lighter.

Goff reportedly told authorities that Cory Thompson had sold him a car, and was demanding it back at gunpoint in the Casey's parking lot.

On the other side, Cory Thompson had called the Rogers Police Department a few days earlier, on Dec. 27, to report his BMW passenger car had been stolen. Goff stated he bought the BMW from Cory Thompson for $1,000 on Dec. 24, but Cory Thompson denied selling the vehicle to Goff and said they forged a bill of sale.

When authorities explained to Cory Thompson the vehicle issue is a civil matter, his response to this allegedly was "I guess it's ok to steal cars. I'll take care of it my way."

Cory Thompson's phone number was obtained from the call notes when he called the police department to report his vehicle stolen. Investigators requested Rogers Central Dispatch contact Cingular Wireless and request emergency phone location pings to expedite locating him.

After identifying a man walking down the street who matched Cory Thompson's description, authorities questioned the man before he allegedly fled on foot. After the man, later identified as Cory Thompson, dropped a gun in the street, authorities caught up to him.

The discarded gun was confirmed to be reported stolen, according to a police report.

At the station, Cory Thompson said he was out looking for Goff and his vehicle with his brother, Tyler, sister-in-law, Taylor, and his four-year-old nephew.

Cory Thompson said he brought an "airsoft pistol" because Goff is known to carry firearms. After authorities explained to him that they knew it was not an airsoft pistol, Cory Thompson then changed his story and said it was a real firearm.

He said he asked for his vehicle back and saw Goff reach under his seat, that's when he says he pulled the gun out. When asked where he got the firearm, he stated he was walking down the road and found a black backpack with the handgun inside.

A search of the backpack Cory Thompson was carrying found several packages containing credit cards and identification issued to the owner of the stolen firearm.

He stated he intended to sell what items he could to make money since he is homeless.

Cory Thompson was arrested at gunpoint after the foot pursuit. He faces attempted capital murder among other charges. No bond is listed at this time.
