SPRINGDALE, Ark. — A Central Junior High School student was arrested for reportedly having a handgun in their backpack while at school on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
Captain Derek Wright with the Springdale Police Department confirmed the school's resource officer (SRO) "was notified a student may have a pistol in their backpack." After confronting the student, the SRO found a pistol in their backpack.
No threats were made by the student toward the school or any other students, Wright said.
"All concerned are to be commended for their quick response to the matter. The guiding principle of 'if you see something, say something' served Central extremely well. Central will remain diligent and dedicated to the safety of our Central family," Trent Jones, a spokesperson with Springdale Schools, said.
The student was arrested and charged with possession of a handgun on school property, which is a Class D felony.
