Officer fatally shoots man wielding two knives in DeSoto, police say

An officer shot the man once in the chest after repeatedly telling him to stop and drop his weapons, police said.

DESOTO, Texas — A video went viral on Instagram showing DeSoto police fatally shooting a 26-year-old man on the front lawn of a house on Friday morning.

In a statement from the DeSoto Police Department, officials said they were called at about 10:39 a.m. Friday by the man, Arthur Lee Armstrong Jr., who reportedly said he had several weapons and wanted to harm police.

Officers drove to the residence in the 1000 block of Hunters Creek Drive after a second caller reportedly confirmed to police Armstrong was there with multiple others and had a knife.

Upon arrival, police said they found Armstrong in the front yard with a knife in each hand, and he reportedly began to immediately approach the officers.

After disregarding multiple commands from officers to stop and drop the knives, police said Armstrong continued moving toward them when an officer shot him in the chest with a single round from a patrol rifle.

Armstrong was disarmed and officers immediately began life-saving measures, police said. He was taken to Central Methodist Hospital by EMS but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Officials said the Grand Prairie Police Department's investigative services bureau major crimes unit will be investigating the incident and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office public integrity unit was notified. The officer who shot Armstrong has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is conducted.

A press conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the DeSoto Police Department where police will provide additional information on the fatal shooting.
