FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — On Aug. 6, a Fayetteville man pleaded guilty to taking part in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
In security footage, Nathan Earl Hughes is seen pushing against the Capitol police line in the Lower West Terrace tunnel at the Capitol, signaling to rioters, "C'mon! C'mon!" while waving his hand in the direction of the tunnel.
Hughes pleaded guilty to one count of civil disorder, one count of assaulting, resisting or impeding an officer, and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.
After an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice (DOJ), Hughes was arrested in August 2023.
In October 2023, Hughes pleaded not guilty to any involvement in the 2021 riot. Authorities were reportedly able to identify Hughes by his clothing in photos and video taken on Jan. 6, 2021.
Officials said that Hughes "assisted the mob with forcefully removing police riot shields and passing them out of the tunnels ... back to the other rioters.”
Hughes's sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 15, 2024.
