An investigation into Mitchell began after a call to the ASP Crimes Against Children Division hotline. The Lowell Police Department placed Mitchell on administrative leave as a result of the investigation and ASP said he was terminated before his arrest.
Mitchell later pleaded not guilty to the charges related to sexual assault. The assaults took place at two different times and involved two different children, according to court documents.
The former officer was then arrested again in a separate case alleging that he sexually assaulted a third child. Mitchell pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial for the two cases, which was scheduled for Nov. 13, 2024.
However, on Nov. 8, the Washington County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to 5NEWS that Mitchell had pleaded guilty and been sentenced to 120 days in jail and 20 years of probation.
Prosecutors said Mitchell must surrender his law enforcement certification and register as a sex offender.
