Former Lowell police officer pleads not guilty to sexual assault charges involving minors

Court documents allege that the assaults took place at two different times, and involved two different juveniles.

LOWELL, Ark. — According to court documents, a former Lowell police officer, Roy Mitchell, 45, has pleaded not guilty to charges that accuse him of sexually assaulting two minors.

According to the Arkansas State Police (ASP), authorities arrested Mitchell on Oct. 5 after their Crimes Against Children Division received a tip.

Court documents allege that the assaults took place at two different times, and involved two different juveniles.

ASP says Mitchell was "terminated immediately prior to his arrest" before being transported to the Washinton County Detention Center.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO), due to being a former police officer accused of sexual assault, Mitchell will be isolated from the jail's general population, per their classification guidelines.

Mitchell's jury trial date is set for April 12, 2024, at 8 a.m., according to court documents.
