POTEAU, Okla — A gun was found in a student's car today at Poteau High School.
According to a Facebook post from Poteau Public Schools, a student's vehicle was searched, and a firearm was found.
"Late this morning, administrators received a report that a student may have a weapon in their vehicle on campus. Our high school and 7th and 8th grade center followed our proper procedures. Following a search, a firearm and other substances were found in the vehicle. we have taken, and will continue to take, this situation extremely seriously," Superintendent Scott Kempenich said in the statement.
Kempenich says that all students and staff are safe and that the school day continued normally.
The statement says that school administration and local law enforcement will be addressing the incident, but that further information about the student will not be shared due to privacy laws.
"There is nothing more important to the district than the safety, health and well-being of our students and staff. We are grateful to those who reported their concerns to administrators out of concern for the safety of our students and staff," Kempenich said.
