While awaiting trial for two sexual assault charges, former Arkansas police officer arrested for sexual assault

Officials said just four weeks after being arrested for sexually assaulting two minors, he assaulted another minor below the age of 14.

LOWELL, Ark. — According to court documents, former Lowell police officer Roy Mitchell, 45, has been arrested for sexually assaulting a minor while awaiting trial under two other sexual assault charges, also involving two separate minors.

According to the Arkansas State Police (ASP), authorities first arrested Mitchell on Oct. 5 after their Crimes Against Children Division received a tip. Officials said just four weeks later, he sexually assaulted another minor below the age of 14.

After his first arrest, Mitchell was reportedly transported to the Washinton County Detention Center and later released on bond.

Records show that about an hour after Mitchell was arrested and booked the second time he was once again released on bond.

ASP said Mitchell was "terminated [from the Lowell Police Department] immediately before his arrest" in October.

Mitchell's jury trial for the first two alleged sexual assaults are set for April 12, 2024, at 8 a.m., according to court documents.
