FORT SMITH, Ark. — A 23-year-old man has been formally charged with manslaughter after he allegedly led law enforcement on a chase in Fort Smith that caused a crash and left one person dead.
Arkansas State Police (ASP) identified Kevin Swafford of Paris as the driver of the vehicle. His passenger, 25-year-old Calvin Eubanks, died at the scene of the crash.
Swafford was treated for his injuries and booked into the Sebastian County Detention Center shortly after.
Sebastian County Prosecutor Daniel Shue announced on Nov. 21 that Swafford is now charged with manslaughter, fleeing, and two counts of criminal mischief. He's also charged as a habitual offender.
The incident occurred on Nov. 16 and ended in a crash at Zero and 31st streets, according to police.
A trooper attempted to stop Swafford because he reportedly had no license plate. Instead of stopping, ASP said Swafford tried to flee. During the chase, which began on Towson Avenue, Swafford allegedly disregarded traffic lights while driving at a high rate of speed in areas with heavy traffic.
After running a red light, Swafford reportedly caused a collision with three other vehicles. According to ASP, only Swafford and one other driver sustained minor injuries.
"The suspect was driving recklessly and putting the public in extreme danger. The citizens of Fort Smith should be able to enjoy a safe Saturday evening," Col. Mike Hagar with ASP said. "Although we regret any loss of life, we thank God other motorists were not seriously injured."
Swafford will be arraigned on Nov. 27
ASP said they would conduct an internal review of the trooper's pursuit.
