Man found guilty and sentenced to life in 2020 Springdale murder case

According to court documents, Valezquez-Diaz originally pleaded not guilty.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — A man arrested in connection to the shooting death of a Springdale woman in 2020 has been found guilty and sentenced.

David Velazquez-Diaz, now 48, was arrested after a shooting on June 23, 2020, that killed 36-year-old Carol Lorenzo-Olivera.

Springdale police said they responded to a shooting report at Keystone Apartments in Springdale. Once in the parking lot they found Lorenzo-Olivera face down next to a car and suffering a gunshot wound to the head. After surgery she was placed on life support and eventually succumbed to her injuries.

Valezquez-Diaz was located a day later. Police called crisis negotiators and the SWAT team and convinced him to surrender peacefully. he was taken into custody without incident after just over an hour.

According to court documents, Valezquez-Diaz originally pleaded not guilty to murder. On Nov. 7, 2024, he was found guilty by a jury and was sentenced to life in prison.
