TULSA COUNTY, Okla. — Muldrow Public Schools' superintendent was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in Tulsa County on Oct. 8 around 11:20 a.m., according to booking records.
Leon Ashlock, 47, was released on a $1,100 bond a couple hours after his arrest. He also faces a charge for transporting an open container.
The school district did not name Ashlock, but they confirmed a person crashed a district vehicle on the Creek Turnpike and was later taken into custody by Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP). However, an OHP arrest report confirmed Ashlock crashed a Muldrow Public School vehicle on State Highway 364, also known as Creek Turnpike, while allegedly drunk.
Before crashing, the report said an off-duty firefighter was following the vehicle and updating the Tulsa Police Department on its location. Once law enforcement arrived at the scene of the crash, they discovered the driver, Ashlock, was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
Law enforcement also found two 375-mL bottles of 100-proof cinnamon schnapps, which were within reaching distance of the driver, the report said. One reportedly had a couple of ounces left, while the other was completely empty.
"[Ashlock] was very unsteady on his feet, his eyes were red, watery, and bloodshot," the report said. "He had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and person. His actions were lethargic and he seemed confused. He could not explain why he was in Tulsa, where he was coming from, or where he had been."
Ashlock reportedly failed all roadside sobriety tests and refused the breath alcohol test. After being medically cleared, Ashlock was booked at the Tulsa County Jail. Ashlock appeared in court the day after his arrest.
The district said the Oklahoma Board of Education is assessing the situation to determine the involvement of "district personnel."
Muldrow Public Schools' full statement:
"This afternoon, the Muldrow Public Schools was notified by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol that one of the district’s vehicles was involved in a traffic accident on the Creek Turnpike. As a result, the vehicle sustained damage, and the operator of the vehicle was taken into custody by the OHP. The board of education is collecting information concerning these events and the involvement of district personnel. The district will have no further comment at this time as it seeks to learn the facts but will provide a full report to the Muldrow community at the appropriate time."
Ashlock began his first year as superintendent for the 2024-2025 school year this August. The district announced his hire in April 2024.
On Oct. 21, the district posted to Facebook that Ashlock had submitted his resignation, and the Board of Education accepted it.
Roger Sharp, who retired as superintendent in May 2012, was appointed as the new superintendent for Muldrow Public Schools.
