One dead after high-speed pursuit with stolen vehicle in Greenwood

Two passengers, one of which was an infant, were in the car leading the pursuit.

GREENWOOD, Ark. — One man is dead after police say he led a high-speed pursuit with a stolen vehicle in Greenwood on March 8.

According to an Arkansas Department of Public Safety crash report, 32-year-old Willis Kelvin of Alma was traveling northbound on Highway 71 near Highway 45 at a high rate of speed when he exited the roadway and collided with a pole.

Kelvin was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 30-year-old Fort Smith man, who was Kelvin's passenger, was injured in the crash. The Greenwood Police Department (GPD) says that another passenger, an infant, was not injured in the crash.

GPD says that the vehicle Kelvin crashed was stolen.

"Yesterday evening our officers intercepted a stolen vehicle. A traffic stop was attempted. However, the driver of the vehicle fled away at high speeds. As the pursuit was being transferred to state police, the driver of the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole at Hwy 71 and Hwy 45 and the collided with a second vehicle," GPD said in a Facebook post.

Arkansas State Police is investigating the crash, and GPD will conduct an internal review of the pursuit.
