FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A suspect attempting to flee a traffic stop in Fayetteville crashed his vehicle in a deadly wreck, according to Arkansas State Police (ASP).
According to a release from ASP, Noah Cargill, 20, of Fayetteville, was fleeing a trooper attempting to conduct a traffic stop on Jan. 13 when he lost control and crashed into an oncoming vehicle, killing the driver.
ASP says that the trooper activated his lights and attempted a traffic stop after witnessing Cargill driving recklessly on Wedington Drive.
Cargill then fled, running a red light and traveling through a neighborhood at high speeds, the release said. He then swerved around cars on Rupple Road before losing control of his vehicle and crashed into an oncoming vehicle, killing the driver.
The civilian, David Michael Pemberton of California, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 56.
The release says that Cargill will be charged with negligent homicide, fleeing and other traffic violations. He was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
“This tragedy is precisely the reason we’ve been imploring people not to flee from law enforcement,” ASP Colonel Mike Hagar said. “Fleeing from law enforcement is a selfish act that risks the lives of everyone on the road. We pray for the family of the innocent civilian killed today.”
The Fayetteville Police Department (FPD) confirmed via Facebook that it was assisting the investigation.
"The Fayetteville Police Department is working a vehicle collision that has caused traffic to be shut down on Rupple Road at W. Wales Dr. northbound and southbound," an FPD Facebook post said.
