Authorities locate couple who disappeared near Sallisaw Creek Park after gunfire was heard, police say

According to police, a message saying "Turn your phone off, there are drones." was visible upon inspection of a nearby phone.

SALLISAW, Okla. — On the night of July 16, Sallisaw police reportedly responded to a call saying a man had fired a gun at Sallisaw Creek Park while with his girlfriend.

When they arrived on the scene, officers couldn't find the couple or any sign of a shooting but determined the incident happened "near the city and county border," according to police.

Police said an extensive search by Cherokee Marshals, police, and Sequoyah County deputies utilizing drones was conducted, but no trace of the couple was found beyond the man's cell phone.

According to police, a message from the man's father saying "Turn your phone off, there are drones." was visible upon inspection of the phone.

The City of Sallisaw confirmed on July 18 that the couple had been located safely. Stay with 5NEWS as this story develops.
