Roland man accused of manslaughter after 2-year-old girl dies in accidental shooting gets probation

Police say Thomas Goddard had laid his firearm on the dresser and fell asleep.

ROLAND, Okla. — A Roland father facing a manslaughter charge after his 2-year-old daughter died in an accidental shooting has been put on probation.

Court documents say that on October 23, 2023, Roland police reported to the home of Thomas Goddard after hearing a 2-year-old had been shot.

Assistant Chief Chris Waters and a first responder transported the girl to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

According to an affidavit, interviews revealed that Goddard had laid his firearm on the dresser and fell asleep. While was asleep, his 2-year-old daughter reportedly got the gun and shot herself accidentally.

Goddard, 25, allegedly told police that he had not received formal gun training. He told police he had taught his other kids gun safety, but that his 2-year-old was too young. However, he did say he "taught her not to touch."

Family members told police that Goddard always either kept the gun in his pocket or on the dresser at all times. Other guns in the home were "not kept up high," the affidavit says.

According to court documents, Goddard pleaded "Nolo Contenderes," or no contest, to a second-degree manslaughter charge.

The court deferred judgment and sentencing until May 29, 2026. During this two-year period, he will be placed on probation with the Department of Corrections.

Court documents say that he will be ordered to complete 40 hours of community service and follow recommendations set by DHS.
