WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO), Corporal Stevon Grindstaff was involved in a pursuit that ended in a shooting that left one man dead on Sunday, Dec. 3.
Officials say at around 10:30 p.m. Corporal Grindstaff tried to conduct a traffic stop on a pickup truck at Blue Springs Road and Beav-O-Rama Road.
Officials said the driver of the pickup, Scottie Stacy, did not stop, resulting in a pursuit that ended with Stacy "going through a fence," down a dead-end road, and "into a field" where Stacy finally stopped.
WCSO said when the deputy stepped out of his vehicle to approach the suspect, Stacy "rapidly accelerated in reverse toward the deputy and the patrol car," hitting the patrol car.
The deputy then shot at Stacy, officials say. Although EMS had been called, WCSO said Stacy died at the scene.
There was reportedly a passenger in Stacy's vehicle, but they were "not injured," ASP reports.
Stacy's body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory. The release states Sheriff Cantrell with WCSO asked ASP to investigate the shooting.
